Why a Movie Club Beats a Book Club for New Year’s Resolutions

So, you are watching the “Comedy Night” episode of Corner Gas (S1.E10) and see how the newly formed book club devolves from reading the more literary Life of Pi, to The Saint in New York, Don Pendleton’s Mack Bolan Executioner #147: Payback Game, and, ultimately, First Blood before deciding they should just watch the movies and you say to yourself, “There’s an idea for the new year–a movie club!”

I have to say, it works much better to get together and watch a movie than to get together and read a book…and your discussion after they movie can just be a brief discussion about what was “so cool” and a quick whip ’round to decide if the group liked it or not. No list of discussion questions required.

In that spirit, today’s “Year of” resolutions book is Cathleen Rountree’s The Movie Lovers’ Club: How to Start Your Own Film Group. The true value of the club is the gathering with friends, family or even enemies (bury the hatchet, don’t you know), the good times, the snacks…and the checking off of a New Year’s resolution that you might actually keep. Not hard to take, but it still counts.

Who knows? It might even evolve into a book club! 🙂
